I bought this Excalibur 3900B 9 Tray Deluxe Dehydrator for drying fruit. Drying is very even across and between trays - no need to rotate or swap trays during drying. As you'd expect, smaller cut fruits dry faster than larger ones, so you'll want to check the results a couple of times to see how each piece is doing.
We live in a high desert. It's great inside in the winter. Sliced pitted fruits dry overnight as well as jerkies. I never use the machine to dry anything over 119°. This dehydrator beats the round variety as it has the side fan and adjustable thermostat. The side fan means you very rarely have to rotate trays and it cuts the drying time.
- 9-Tray dehydrator, 15 square feet of drying space
- Built in on/off switch
- Great for large families and gardens
- Includes adjustable thermostat
- Easy to clean Polyscreen tray inserts
The Excalibur 3900B 9 Tray
Deluxe Dehydrator is also much easier to clean than the round dehydrators. Don't bother with the 5 tray version - you'll wish you had went for the 9 tray instead. The added height inside the 9 tray makes it easy to use for raising a bowl of bread dough.
Smaller pieces take about 6 hours, larger ones up to 24 hours at the recommended 119F temperature setting for fruit. When drying larger pieces of fruit, we only use 4 or 5 trays at one time so we can space them farther apart in the 9 slots.
This Excalibur 3900B 9 Tray Deluxe Dehydrator model has no timer. The unit is about the size of a microwave oven but is light enough to carry easily. The unit comes with a helpful summary instruction booklet, and a detailed larger paperback book.
So far we've dried several varieties of peaches, nectarines, plums, bananas, and cherry tomatoes. They turned out really delicious and will be great to enjoy through the winter.
